The languages of the world are estimated to be between 6000 and 7000. Yet, due to liberal global economy, emigration and improved communication networks, the linguistic repertoire of the world is increasingly dwindling. Sadly, when languages fade, the world’s rich mosaic of cultural diversity is not spared.
Tamarind Translations was among the sponsors of the International Mother Language Day (IMLD), a 3-day conference held 20–22 February at Kitui Campus of Kenyatta University in eastern Kenya, 175 km from Nairobi.
IMLD has been observed on 21 February since 1999 when it was launched by UNESCO to promote awareness of languages and cultural diversity across the world. The conference, themed ‘Hallowing Mother Language and Cultural Diversity in Africa‘, gathered over 100 international language and education experts.
Tamarind Translations participated with three delegates, an exhibition stand as well as presentation of a paper titled Towards Simultaneous Bilingualism of Kenyan Translators by our Managing Director Theophan Marube. Visitors to our stand were treated to presentations of our professional language services that include local African and international languages. Laban Mahindu demonstrated SDL Trados, the translation software marketed by our company in 15 countries in Africa.
To be part of the activities to mark this day was a great experience for our team. As the leading language service provider based at the heart of Africa that provides quality translations into and from indigenous African languages, this was a great moment to meet other experts and set the tone for greater recognition of indigenous languages.
Professor Ngũgi wa Thiongo, renowned Kenyan author and linguistics scholar, and guest speaker at the IMLD event, visited our stand and commended our effort in translating into local languages.
How many language service providers can match that?
Tamarind Language Services has developed steadily since the start in Sweden in 1989, and has always shown growth. A big thank you to all our customers and suppliers for making it possible to still be here providing language services, with a smile.
We look forward to continuing our work with the same enthusiasm, skill and service-mindedness that we have always shown, in Sweden and in Kenya.
