The 3rd Africa International Translation Conference (AITCO23) took place in February 2023 in Mombasa, Kenya.
This conference brings together language professionals worldwide and aims to assist their professional development by availing learning and networking opportunities. Tamarind Language Services was represented at this annual event by Laban Mahindu and Mitchelle Akumu who joined language professionals from over 20 countries who met colleagues to exchange experiences.
Mombasa, the second largest city in Kenya, hosted the event because of the popularity of its white sandy beaches, hospitable people, the Swahili language (the most recently recognised UN language), and its coastal delicacies. This is the city where translators, interpreters, and terminologists from all over the world gathered for the third time for a 2-day fun-filled conference that was climaxed by breathtaking tours around the coast. Attendees toured several historical and picturesque sites including, Fort Jesus. The fort was built 1593–1596 to protect the port of Mombasa from outside invaders. According to UNESCO, Fort Jesus is one of the most outstanding and well-preserved examples of 16th-century Portuguese military fortification and a landmark in the history of this type of construction.
The keynote address was delivered by Professor Eleanor Cornelius, Vice President of the International Federation of Translators. She reminded participants about the place and role of professional associations in the translation sector. She also observed that although African languages are often overlooked in the global market, they have tremendous potential to revolutionize digital media and the way people interact with it. By embracing the value of African languages, businesses, and organizations can create relevant and engaging content that is accessible to local audiences and in so doing provide them with a competitive edge. By using African languages new audiences can be reached and market shares expanded.
